Illegal bird trapping: Repeat offender gets away with “reduced” fine - CABS

Valletta. Today at the law court in Valletta a poacher was found guilty of illegally trapping songbirds near Buskett in March 2017. He was fined 1,200 Euros and had his trapping license revoked for one year. The Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS), whose volunteers reported the case to the police, criticised the court for not taking into account that the man had a prior conviction for illegal bird trapping back in 2015 when he was filmed by a CABS team and later handed a 1000 Euro fine and a two year suspension of his license. “Unfortunately the court missed the opportunity to deter others from poaching and instead send out the message that the more convictions you have the milder you will be punished”, CABS Press Officer Axel Hirschfeld said.
