Record year for CABS’ harrier project in Germany.
13.08.2024
The breeding season for Marsh harriers and Montagu's harriers is now over - the last young birds have now fledged. Since the end of April, CABS staff have found a total of 17 nests of the ground-breeding birds of prey in the fields between Bonn and Düren - 14 Marsh harriers and 3 Montagu's harriers. Most were located in barley and wheat fields, only a few in reeds or rape. Some nests were ready before the harvest date so that the young could fly out undisturbed. We had to protect 6 nests with fenced protection zone so that they did not end up swallowed by the combine harvesters - from which 16 Marsh harriers and 6 Montagu's harriers fledged!
This is the best result we have ever had in our harrier protection project!
