‘Occupy Akas’ – we occupy a trapping site in Cyprus
In the hills northeast of the village of Maroni in Cyprus, a notorious criminal poacher has been wreaking havoc for years. The man nicknamed ‘Akas’, has set up a professional trapping facility with huge nets on a piece of garden land. Together with his helpers, he traps and kills tens of thousands of songbirds every year, which he sells at a profit on the black market. Without paying tax, of course. Although he and his nets are well known and the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) has already presented extensive evidence on several occasions, the bird trapper has so far remained largely unpunished. Since the authorities seem unable to put an end to these illegal activities, we are occupying his trapping site this autumn under the slogan ‘Occupy Akas’.
