Wader trappers shut down on Malta.
Last week, a CABS field investigation on Malta uncovered three large ponds set up specifically for the trapping and shooting of plovers and other wading birds. The case was reported to the Environmental Protection Unit of the Malta Police Force who subsequently confiscated four large clap-nets and a cage trap. In addition, two freshly caught Little Ringed Plovers and two Green Sandpipers were rescued and taken to a vet. All four birds were later released unharmed in a nature reserve. A poacher was caught in the act with a loaded gun in his camouflage hut. The man is facing a heavy fine and the revocation of his hunting licence and will be sentenced in due course.
