Autumn hunting season begins today across Europe.

01.09.2023

Today - 1st September, marks the beginning of this year's hunting season for wild birds in many European countries. With few exceptions, as of today, more than 6 million+ hunters in the 27 Member States of the European Union (EU) and other non-EU countries are allowed to shoot several species of wild birds. Of particular concern is the fact that among the 82 species classified as "huntable" under the Birds Directive, there are now many threatened species, including turtle dove, lapwing, pochard and snipe.

This autumn, CABS are once again conducting several bird protection camps along the migratory ‘bottlenecks’ of the Mediterranean. >200 volunteers with a range of different backgrounds will join forces to monitor poaching hotspots in Spain, Italy, Malta, Cyprus and Lebanon. Anyone caught targeting protected species with guns, prohibited traps or electronic lures can expect to be reported to the authorities.
