Aggressive bird trapper convicted in Cyprus
02.12.2024
A Cypriot poacher has been handed a suspended sentence by a British court in Cyprus (Court of the Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri and Dhekelia) for illegal bird trapping, death threats as well as severely damaging a vehicle. In autumn 2023, A CABS-team reported an active trapping site inside the British military base of Dhekelia, where the accused had set up seven huge mist-nets and caught more than 230 songbirds in just one night. He was sentenced to two months' suspended imprisonment for 3 years for poaching, threatening behaviour and vandalism; and ordered to pay 900 euros in compensation for threatening behaviour and criminal damage. The court also ordered the confiscation of an off-road vehicle costing around 11,000 € which had been used by the defendant to commit the offences.
