Hunters & trappers protest against high fines in Cyprus.
While the CABS team currently working in Cyprus has seen a huge increase in bird trapping with nets from 0 to 26 cases in the last two weeks, hunters and bird trappers demonstrated against our work last Saturday. At the event, speakers called for lower fines for the use of illegal electronic decoys and even for bird-trapping with limesticks to be authorised. As at similar marches in previous years, CABS was the focus of hostile attacks by hunting officials and bird-trapping lobbyists. In view of the brazen demands for a quasi-abolition of EU environmental law in Cyprus, CABS today call on the government to step up against poaching. Our current figures show that we are not impressed by the attempts at intimidation: Since the beginning of January, we have already convicted 18 poachers and dismantled 30 nets!
