17 poachers convicted in north-western Italy.

17.11.2024

Together with the Nucleo carabinieri CITES Torino unit of the environmental police, employees from the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) have convicted 17 hunters of illegal songbird poaching in recent weeks, near Turin (Piedmont). The men were either using illegal electronic decoys or had shot protected species. A total of 16 hunting weapons and 15 electronic decoys were seized, as well as over 20 shot birds (chaffinches, bramblings, meadow pipits and 1 starling). The region has developed as a destination for hunting tourists in recent years because of the lack of enforcement until recently. The perpetrators came from all over central and northern Italy - from Lombardy and Veneto, Liguria and even Tuscany. Since we have intensified controls here and the information has been circulating among hunters, illegal bird hunting has noticeably decreased.
