12 limestick trapping sites shut down in Cyprus.
15.09.2023

In the just the first full week of our bird protection camp on Cyprus, our teams have found 12 active trapping sites with limesticks. One such site in Sotira, was also meticulously prepared with running water below carefully crafted limestick holders. It was clear that dozens of birds had already been caught and killed by the time we managed to raid the site with the authorities. 88 limesticks and an electronic decoy caller were collected and dismantled. Unfortunately, it seems the low fines in autumn simply aren’t a sufficient deterrent. One poacher was fined just 200€ euros for possession and use of limesticks, despite this being the fourth time we’ve caught him in the last 10 years!
This week we've saved 17 birds including this beautiful willow warbler. Find out more about our work on Cyprus here.
