Dear Commissioner Dimas,
Despite the unclear status of the populations of some European bird species, or indeed an acute threat to their survival, hunters in all EU member states together shoot down more than 100 million wild birds – annually! Although the Bird Protection Guidelines lay down that hunting is only to be permitted on a sustainable basis, millions of birds of species, the status of which the European Commission has categorised as critical or ‘unfavourable’ (e.g. Skylark, Lapwing, Curlew, Common Snipe, Turtle Dove, Common Quail, Garganey) are shot annually. The hunting of species with declining populations can not be considered as sustainable and contradicts entirely the conservation efforts undertaken in my country. I therefore call on you to immediately remove all bird species whose populations are endangered from the list of huntable species (Annex II to the Bird Protection Guidelines) and to carry out a close scrutiny of the sustainability of hunting of migrant birds in general.

trotz unklarer oder akut bedrohter Bestände schießen Jäger in allen 25 EU-Mitgliedsstaaten zusammen mehr als 100 Millionen Wildvögel vom Himmel – jedes Jahr! Obwohl die Vogelschutzrichtlinie vorschreibt, dass die Bejagung auf nachhaltiger Basis zu erfolgen hat, werden auch Millionen Tiere erlegt, deren Erhaltungsstatus von der Kommission als kritisch bzw. „unvorteilhaft” eingestuft wird (z.B. Feldlerche, Kiebitz, Brachvogel, Bekassine, Turteltaube, Wachtel, Knäkente). Die Bejagung von Arten mit zurückgehenden Beständen kann nicht nachhaltig sein und konterkariert die Bemühungen, die in meinem Land zum Schutz der Zugvögel unternommen werden. Ich fordere Sie deshalb auf, alle im Bestand bedrohten Vogelarten umgehend von der Liste der in der EU jagdbaren Arten (Anhang II Vogelschutzrichtlinie) zu streichen und die Nachhaltigkeit der Zugvogeljagd generell auf den Prüfstand zu stellen.
