Organisational protest at annual hunting derogations in Italy

Dear Minister Clini,
The video published on the internet channel Youtube, which shows the massacre of Chaffinches, Bramblings, Hawfinches and Meadow Pipits in the Southern Alps, is shocking in the extreme. It is also unbelievable and disturbing to be informed that regional governments, in clear contravention of Italian legislation and the European Commission bird protection guidelines, permit such a massive annual intervention in the populations of these species during autumn migration.
The issue of derogations permitting the shooting of large numbers of protected bird species, as is the case in Northern Italy, is completely unacceptable. These migratory birds, which breed in the countries of Western and Northern Europe and are regular guests in our woods, parks and gardens, are a common European natural resources and must not be sacrificed for the short-lived satisfaction of a hunting minority.
As Minister in the new Italian government with responsibility for the environment, we appeal to you to take firm action to put an end to this practice once and for all and ensure that the provisions of the Birds Directive are effectively implemented in Italy.

l’Italia è l’unico paese che utilizza la caccia in deroga per autorizzare l’abbattimento di milioni di esemplari di specie protette in tutta Europa. Recentemente un video, pubblicato su internet, ha messo in luce il grave danno che le deroghe in materia venatoria arrecano ai piccoli uccelli migratori, patrimonio di tutti i paesi dell’Unione Europea.
Le chiediamo pertanto che intervenga al più presto in maniera da porre fine a questi abusi e di garantire che anche l’Italia si allinei agli altri paesi nella protezione totale e inderogabile di fringuelli, peppole, pispole, prispoloni e frosoni.
