With its bird protection camps in in Brescia (North Italy), on Sardinia and the southern Italian islands /en/projects/italy/southern-italy in the Gulf of Naples we annually cover the poaching hotspots in operations lasting several weeks. In these operations our volunteers, led by CABS species protection experts, locate and remove thousands of illegal bird traps every year and assist the police to catch and prosecute poachers.

Selected results from our large scale bird protection camps in Italy are listed below. Only the most important types of traps are shown for lack of space.

Comments:

  • 1: Snap traps were found in Brescia for the first time in 1998.
  • 2: CABS volunteers patrol the mountains and search for trapping sites with traps and mist nets and report them to the authorities. The police then set ambushes to catch the poachers red-handed. This form of cooperation between the police and CABS began for the first time in 1999.
  • 3: CABS camps on Sardinia began in 1999.
  • 4: CABS operations in Southern Italy began in 1993.
  • 5: Including 31 nets from spring ops 2013.
  • 6: Including 34 nets traps found during house raids
  • 7: Including 200 snap traps found during house raids
  • 8: Including 62 nets traps found during house raids
  • 9: Including 46 nets traps found during house raids

*:Approx. values. No precise numbers for snap traps are available for 1995. The extremely fine horsehair snares are impossible to count accurately once they have been dismantled so estimates are always made of their numbers.
