Dear Commissioner Füle,
In the course of the negotiations for its accession to the European Union the Government of Iceland has demanded amendments to various European nature conservation guidelines. After its accession to the EU, in addition to whale hunting, Iceland wishes to continue with hunting of strictly protected Auk species, the trapping of Puffins during the breeding season, as well as the taking of eggs from seabird colonies.
The conservation of seabirds and whales is an integral part of the environmental standards agreed by all EU member states. Hunting of these protected avian and mammal species, especially during the reproduction phase, can in no way be considered sustainable and therefore contradicts the objectives of both the EU Birds and Habitats Directives.
I therefore urge you to use the powers of your office to ensure that, as a prerequisite to accession, Iceland’s hunting legislation is amended to meet EU conservation requirements, and not the other way round!

| Sehr geehrter Herr Kommissar Füle, bei den Verhandlungen zum Beitritt zur EU hat die Regierung von Island die Änderung verschiedener europäischer Naturschutzrichtlinien gefordert. Neben dem Walfang soll die Jagd auf europaweit streng geschützte Alkenvögel sowie der Fang von Papageitauchern zur Brutzeit und die Entnahme von Eiern aus Seevogelkolonien auch nach einem Beitritt Islands zur EU fortgeführt werden. Der Schutz von Walen und Seevögeln gehört zu den Umweltstandards, auf die sich alle Europäer geeinigt haben. Die Jagd auf diese Arten – vor allem während der Fortpflanzungsperiode – kann nicht nachhaltig sein und widerspricht deshalb den Zielen der FFH-Direktive sowie der Europäischen Vogelschutzrichtlinie. Ich möchte Sie deshalb bitten, sich dafür einzusetzen, dass Island seine Jagdgesetzgebung an die in der EU anpasst, und nicht umgekehrt! Mit freundlichen Grüßen |
